Military service requirement for establishing eligibility

In this Elder Law Minute, Wes Coulson discusses the military service requirement for establishing eligibility for VA pension benefits.

Military service requirement for establishing eligibility

Transcript:

Hi, I’m Wes Coulson and this is your Elder Law Minute. This is another in our series of presentations on VA Pension Benefits. Today I would like to talk about the military service requirement for establishing eligibility.

The veteran, through whom benefits are being claimed, needs to have served at least 90 days on active duty. At least one of those during a wartime period, those are defined specifically by dates, and to have had any kind of a discharge other than dishonorable, so honorable, general, medical all work. Let me mention two things that are not requirements.

First, there is no requirement of having sustained any sort of a wartime disability, that’s a separate program of benefits. And there is also no requirement that the veteran have been in the country where the fighting was taking place. So, if you served in Germany during the Korean War, you are most certainly a wartime veteran. Thanks.
